Lacy Shells Scarf

I have recently been loving the rose pink color, so when I went shopping for some new yarn I was on the hunt for this color. I really wanted to try my hand at a new infinity scarf, but a little different and a bit more challenging. So this is what I came up with! I hope you like it and enjoy the pattern.

Additional info: Size 6mm crochet hook, Single crochet, Half double crochet, Double crochet, Treble crochet

The Base
1.      Chain 48 inches, connect to create a loop
2.     Chain 1, then single crochet around and slip stitch to the first one.
3.     Chain 2, then half double crochet around and slip stitch to the first one.
4.     Chain 3, then double crochet around and slip stitch to the first one.
5.     Chain 4, then treble crochet around and slip stitch to the first one.

Lacy Shells
Foundation row: Chain 1, 1 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook. * Chain 1. 1 single crochet in each of next 4 stitches. Chain 2. 1 single crochet in each of next 4 stitches. Repeat from * until the last 2 chain. 1 single crochet in each of the last 2 stitches. Slip stitch to the first

2nd row: Chain 1 *(1 double crochet, chain 2, 1 double crochet) in the space that you created by chaining 1 in the row before. (2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) in the space that you created by chaining 2 in the row before. Repeat from * until done the round, chain 2, then slip stitch to the first.

3rd row: Chain 1 *(2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) in the chain 2 space. *(1 double crochet, chain 2, 1 double crochet) in the chain 1 space. Repeat from * until done the round, chain 2, then slip stitch to the first.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows 8 times.

The Ending Base
1.      Chain 4, treble crochet in the stitches along the top, but don’t be careful to get every one, just kinda go along and hit most but miss some along the way. Slip stitch to the first.
2.     Chain 3, double crochet along, missing a stitch every 20 stitches or so. Slip stitch to the first.
3.     Chain 2, half double crochet along, slip stitch to the first.
4.     Chain 1, single crochet along, slip stitch to the first.
5.     Weave in your ends.

I really hope that you try it out, and if you do, let me know how it turned out!

This is a free pattern, but please do not repost it as your own. You may make and sell this product, but please mention that you found it here. Pictures taken and owned by me.

    1. Hi I am so sorry I took so long to answer, I used about 3/4 of a ball of 100% acrylic, worsted, 4 ply Bernat Super Value yarn

    3. I'm not sure... It was kinda a standard sized ball of yarn though.

  3. I'm trying to work this pattern and I'm having a problem. I chained 48 and joined to form a ring and it appears that my scarf will be way to small to fit over my head. Am I misreading the instructions? My daughter wants me to make her the scarf for Christmas so I hope you can advise me on what I'm doing wrong!!

    1. Yes the instructions were for 48 inches of chain, I didn't want a specific number of chains in case you chose a thicker yarn, smaller needle, etc. Thanks for asking, if have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask!

  4. How silly, I did the same thing as Peggy!! Chained 48 and wondered how my daughter would ever get it over her head. Then I reread after your reply, Hannah, and really felt silly!!

  5. I love, love, LOVE this pattern. I wonder if it's possible to just shrink it down and make legwarmers with this design? (I've been on a big kick of making legwarmers for my friends and I, heheh.) Thoughts?

  6. I'm confused by the asterisk in the instructions for the foundation chain of lacy shells. I'm new and I got the beginning but now I'm stuck. Could you explain that foundation chain in more detail? Sorry to bother.

    1. No problem!! I am sorry I have taken so long to get back to you; so the first steps are to "Chain 1, 1 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook" then the next step is to " * Chain 1. 1 single crochet in each of next 4 stitches. Chain 2. 1 single crochet in each of next 4 stitches" after completing that you need to return to the * and that again, and again, until you have reached the beginning of your round. So after you do 4 single crochets you start at * again, so chain 1, 1 single crochet in next 4, chain 2 and so on.
Hope I helped, good luck on learning!

  7. I'm confused about the next row after that. Do I do single crochets in between each 1chain or 2chain from the last row? Or do I decrease it by only crocheting in those chain stiches?
    Thanks!

  8. I'm confused by the line, "Chain 1, single crochet in 2nd chain from hook." If you only chain 1, then where does the 2nd chain come from? Did you mean single crochet in next stitch?

    1. Hello, I am sorry about the confusion...
Before the "Foundation Row" you need to do the "Base", that is where the other chains come from.

      Hope this helps!

  10. Great pattern. I was a little nervous not having an exact stitch count, but mine came out great. I used a pink camouflage and it looks super cool

  12. Hi, I absolutely love this pattern, thank you so much for sharing! I made one scarf but didn't realize until the end that it was twisted. I'm currently wiring on another but I'm having the same problem, any tips on how to prevent this?

    1. The most likely reason is because when you connect the chain in step 1 you have a twist in it. It's extremely important to make sure there are no twists in the chain. Hope this helps!! :)

  13. I really love this pattern, it's beautiful. I am new to crocheting and want to try this out, but I'm terrible at reading patterns lol. I'll give it a shot

  14. What a beautiful pattern you have shared with all of us. Thank you so very much. I have couple skeins of beautiful lavender yarn just waiting for a pattern like this. Also have a pink like in picture might try. Love love the lavender.
In gauging size what multiples are you counting? I am wanting to add another 10-12 inches to pattern. Can't wait to get this one going. Thanks again for sharing.

  15. Hi - I found your pattern and I love the look. I have started it with a white yarn that has a shimmer to it. Couple questions: I had trouble at the joining and my rows got longer... can you post a pic of the area where you joined? Also, as I am reading the lacy shells instructions it indicates 'repeat 2nd and 3rd row 8 times - 16 rows? Your pictures don't look like that many rows. I look forward to figuring this out - I can't wait to see how it will come out!

  16. Thank you for sharing this pretty pattern! I finished this today, It took me about two days and a half. Outcome, I love it! Thumps up!

  17. What chain multiples does the starting chain need to be in please or doesn't it matter ?

  18. pretty pattern. Made for a nice Sunday afternoon project; quick and easy. The pattern was easy to follow, the instructions for the ending base "1. but don't be careful to get every one, just kinda go along and hit most but miss some along the way." left something to be desired. I think there needs to be an equivalent of the foundation chain that tightens up the lacy part and gets it ready for the ending base so that the ending base and beginning base are more identical. Because I've crocheted quite a bit, I was able to make it work, but adding one row at the beginning of the ending base and being more specific might make it a better pattern.

  19. I agree with the last poster. There needs to be a base of single crochet stitches between the last cluster stich row and the ending base. I tried to do it as per the pattern but it was very holey. Putting in that row of single crochet tightens up the stitches so that it matches the first row of triple crochet.
Thank you for the pattern, I was looking for an extra Christmas gift to work up quickly and this fit the bill. I did mine in two shades of a mossy green and it's beautiful. I wish I could share a picture.

  20. Great pattern! I like that it's not a set pattern and I can make it bigger or smaller as needed. Thank you!

  21. Beautiful pattern. However, I'm confused about a couple things. In the base, after you chain 1 (or chain 2 or chain 3 or chain 4 depending on which row you're starting), do you do your first single crochet (or double crochet or half double crochet or triple crochet) in the same stitch that you put your chain(s) or do you put your first crochet in the next stitch after the stitch into which you put your chain(s)? In other words, are those chains that start each row supposed to count as the first SC, (or HDC or DC or TRC) of each respective row or are they there just to give height to that row?

Next, after you finish your foundation row, you say, "slip stitch into the first". My question is, 'into the first' what? Into the first chain or into the first sc? I'm thinking that it's into the first chain but I'm not sure.

Similarly, after you finish the 2nd row in the Lacy Shells part, it says to, "slip stitch into the first". Again, my question is, 'into the first' what? Into the first chain or into the first DC? Right now my joins look a mess.

Also, just a point of clarity, in row 3 of the Lacy Shells part, it says to "repeat from * until done the round". I think you mean to "repeat from * to * until..." I knew what you meant but others might not.

Sorry to sound like such a knit wit especially when the pattern is free, but it's such a beautiful cowl that i'd like to make it again, and, as stated above, my joins look horrible on my first one. Thanks.

  25. This is a lovely pattern for a scarf. I'm going to use the pattern, but I'm going to make it a little longer and a little wider and use it as rectangle wrap, with a large button closure. Thank you for the inspiration. Both bases will be mariner blue and center is going to be variegated gem stone. Thanks again
